Couch Potato Chronicles: Buffy, Joss, and the Idea of Heroism

Read this. Now.  RIGHT NOW.

  1. Hollywood knows who the real heroes have been for the last nine years and they can't stomach doing anything that might be seen as praise for those men and women; heroism itself suffers as a consequence.

Look back at the Buffy series and you'll see she reflects how many see the Bush administration in a number of ways: her understanding that her enemies are really evil and need to be killed, that talk doesn't turn vampires into golfing buddies, that sometimes you have to torture a captured enemy to gain information in order to save innocent lives, that some people (nations) have a special duty to be heroes, among other things.

Well, I have to stop here -- I'm getting the urge to explore the metaphor of Buffy as America in the age of terrorism. I'll take a couple of aspirin and lie down until it subsides.
