Hillary Health Care: Whether You Want It or Not

And this is why I remain stubbornly in opposition. Mandatory anything makes me furious.

Look at this rotten quote:

Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton said Sunday she might be willing to garnish the wages of workers who refuse to buy health insurance to achieve coverage for all Americans.

The New York senator has criticized presidential rival Barack Obama for pushing a health plan that would not require universal coverage. Clinton has not always specified the enforcement measures she would embrace, but when pressed on ABC's "This Week," she said: "I think there are a number of mechanisms" that are possible, including "going after people's wages, automatic enrollment."

BAH!

Plus did you see what else? Hillary criticized Obama because Obama's plan would be voluntary. Hillary obviously thinks her mandatory plan is better. I repeat: mandatory anything makes me furious. And what does this say? Criticizing freedom of choice?? Criticizing Obama because his plan is VOLUNTARY?

I find it deeply ironic that Hillary can support the right of a woman to choose abortion, but she won't let a far larger group of Americans choose how to deal with their health via medical plans.
Plus, I absolutely hate Clinton's idea of rule-by-fiat on this issue!

PS: the government already drains too much money from me in the form of taxes! So Hillary wants to raise taxes AND pull more money from unwilling Americans who don't want her health plan? I didn't need a reminder of why this cold-eyed socialist makes me ill.

On June 15, 1993, Cooper met with Clinton to discuss their differences. Clinton was “ice cold” at the meeting, Cooper recalls. “It was the coldest reception of my life. I was excoriated.”

Cooper told her that she was getting pulled too far to the left. He warned that her plan would never get through Congress. Clinton’s response, Cooper now says, was: “We’ll crush you. You’ll wish you never mentioned this to me.”

Really, if this woman is getting anywhere near the White House, I'll rush to 167 Hamdale Avenue in order to help ALF fixing his space shuttle and to join him on his journey back to Melmac.

Well - maybe. I'm traditionally the fire-breathing dragon of a GOPer in these conversations, but.... There is such a thing as 'Will of the People' in a democracy. So if Clinton is elected her ideas should be given respectful consideration if not consent. She has to get it through Congress which was a problem for her last time around if you recall.

Could Clinton's plan work? Maybe. Health insurance is a bigger crisis than it was in 1993. What Hillary is proposing seems very like the French system and the system Mitt Romney tried in Massachussetts.

The idea behind such systems is to reduce per-person health insurance costs by covering everyone and also by standardizing health insurance policies. This cuts out many of the exclusion costs - the costs incurred by the necessity to decide whether a patient is covered and for what he or she is covered. With standard coverage these questions would in theory be automatically answered and we would not have the horrible situation we have today with pre-existing conditions, etc.

I live under the UK NHS system, which has the great virtue of universal coverage but too many drawbacks to list here. The French have a hybrid public-private system. So does the US in fact if not in theory, but the financing of the US system prevents sensible fee for service pricing, which the French system does not. In short it's more rational and better by most measures.

Dear Don,

Valid points you make. My main thrust isn't about the viability of the proposed PROGRAM, but about the fact that I don't like Hillary's attitude on this matter, her pet project of HillaryCare. This isn't the first time she's been draconian in her approach, and indeed the brass-knuckled Clinton Machine is making me ill, whether it's making ludicrous statements about forcing people to join HillaryCare or making ugly assaults on Obama.

Besides, I repeat my undying hatred of being forced to do anything.

As for the health thing, I'm more for a hybrid public-private creature.

The principle of individual rights prevents the "will of the people" from practicing cannibalism on a minority. Apparently, an increasing number of people believe it is proper to eat me (my life, my wealth, my liberty), as long as they do it one bite at a time. Look up Reagan's joke about the pig with a peg leg wearing 3 medals.
