Holy Movie Review Pretending To Be Asinine Commentary, Batman!
Apparently Thomas Friedman is now quoting from The Dark Knightin an attempt to explain ISIS and Boko Haram. An entire quarter of his "analysis" is just lines from the movie. Dude, seriously? Still, here's a retort worth repeating:
@AntDeRosa I swear to Zod that Friedman likely hasn't even seen Nolan's Batman films. ISIS is clearly Bane, not the Joker.

"Reason cannot touch them, because rationalism never drove them. Their barbarism comes from a dark place, where radical Islam gives a sense of community to humiliated, drifting young men, who have never held a job or a girl’s hand. That’s a toxic mix."
OMG so stupid! I like that he mocks them but this is not what motivates people to join ISIS. Many of them are educated middle class people with families. They are not humiliated (by who?)jobless people who can't find a girl.
"Well, because he thought it was good sport. Because some men aren’t looking for anything logical, like money."

It is all a big mystery. No one can figure out what motivates ISIS. It can't be anything identifiable. They can only be motivated by just wanting to watch the world burn.
You can't deal with a problem if you refuse to believe that ISIS is populated with feeling and thinking human beings. These people are not animals acting out of instinct. This is an interesting use of dehumanization, I will say that.
