I was told as a child that to keep a cat from running away from a new house (in an attempt to return to the familiar old house) was to butter its feet.
Now, I had somehow gotten the idea that it was the cat's natural inclination to lick its feet clean that would keep it in the new house long enough to calm down -- I see now that, if the floor-oriented cat-feet and enhanced with floor-oriented butter, that cat ain't goin' nowhere!
