Quirky Euro Files: A New Collection

This looks like it might become an intriguing catalog of cultural oddities from Europe. Take a look.

Some of the oddities I've heard of (the wife-carrying competition, for example), but some took me entirely by surprise (goose-grabbing in the Basque region?).

Speaking of European quirks, the running of the bulls in Pamplona has just started!

Also, do you have any favorite cultural quirks from your area?

The cultural aspect is debatable, but my alma mater is the home of the Krispy Kreme Challenge, which entails a 2 mile run from the campus belltower to the local Krispy Kreme, eating 1 dozen fresh glazed donuts, and running the 2 miles back to campus. You only officially succeed if you make in under an hour without retching.

Ewwww! I love Krispy Kreme donuts as much as the next girl (plain glazed only -- I'm a purist), but I repeat: Ewwww!

Still, at least in this --unlike at Pamplona -- you can run without the constant possibility of being gored in the butt by an angry bull...

I never was able to participate in the race. It's gotten quite well known down in the NC area, with people coming from out of town to participate. I think last year it raised $15,000 for the NC Children's Hospital. Pretty good for something that started as a couple of bored/drunk guys one weekend.
