Mini-Movie Review Round-Up: MM and the Cinema-Mad Sibling Recommend...

Hey!  Who forgot the popcorn?

Too busy with nerd research to write full reviews right now (I did promise the Cine-Sib that I would write one for "Inception" soon), but in case you gentle readers were wondering what to see at the theater this weekend, the Cinema-Mad Sibling and I recommend:

~"Toy Story 3."  Poignant, moving tale about growing up.  Pixar continues to dazzle both with the technical brilliance of its animation and the quality of its stories and characters.  caveat: You might want to re-watch "Toy Story" and "Toy Story 2" before seeing this third installment. Bonus: Barbie gets to give the best quote of the movie -- probably of any movie this summer.  Grade: A.  I dare any parent or "grown-up" not to get a little misty by the end of this movie.

~"Inception."  Mind-blowing on every level and the most complex, intelligent film you'll see all summer.  Christopher Nolan outdoes himself, and he's the man who gave us "Memento" and "The Dark Knight." Bonus: "Inception" even made me forget that I hate Leonardo di Caprio. Double Bonus: Ken Watanabe! (Love him!) Warning: the plot is so detailed and twisting that you cannot lose your concentration for a second.  Watch it on IMAX if you can; the Cine-Sib and I did.  This is also the sort of movie you really ought to see twice. Grade: A+.  Brilliant.

~"Despicable Me."  Cute French effort with an unusual premise.  It's not Pixar, but it's also worlds better than predictable, formulaic animated fare like "Kung Fu Panda."  Parenthood has never been such a surprise.  Or minions of an evil mastermind so delightful. Grade: B.

~"Salt."  Forget about logic or plausibility, and just watch Angelina Jolie kick butt in this Bourne-like spy thriller that -- hooray -- doesn't depend on ludicrous amounts of CGI. Big dumb fun with bullets and a crazy action sequence on a freeway.  Grade: B.  Probably should be B- for sheer implausibility, though.
