Taiwan: New Head for Mainland Affairs Council

Interestingly, President-elect Ma chose Lai Shin-yuan to be the new head of this important post that deals with China. She's been allied with the DPP and the TSU, both of which strongly support Taiwanese sovereignty -- some TSU members are outriht supporters of formal independence.

This is an interesting choice for Ma. An attempt to calm fears that he will move too fast and close to Beijing? Time to wait and see what happens.

Naw....it just means that MAC isn't going to be important in the game of selling out Taiwan. The real dealings are going to be in the person to person and party to party talks. In fact it wouldn't surprise me if Ma went ahead and created yet another forum for cross-strait talks.

I don't for a second think Ma's really that serious about MAC. I think Ma's just throwing a bone to the opposition -- hence the choice he made, which is interesting in its way. What he'll do with Beijing he'll do via other channels, I imagine.
