Girl Talk: Is There a Difference Between "Single" and "Unmarried"?

Someone over at the New York Times has her undies in a twist about this. Yup, it's that sometime-harridan Maureen Dowd, and she's saying stuff like this:
Single carries a connotation of eligibility and possibility, while unmarried has that dreaded over-the-hill, out-of-luck, you-are-finished, no-chance implication. An aroma of mothballs and perpetual aunt.
Seriously? She goes on to create a dichotomy between "fun single" and "sad unmarried."

Girls, don't we have better things to do -- like live our lives?
