Quote of the Day: Extorting OPM in the Name of Compassion

Law prof Bainbridge has some observations, including this:
It is [all too easy] to be compassionate with other people's money. Yet, there in lies not compassion but coercion.
A related quote from another source:
The problem with compassionate lawmaking isn't that compassion is bad. The problem is that legislation is not compassion. There is nothing compassionate about giving away other people's money.
THANK YOU for saying that.  You'll recall my previous post about OPM.

Look, I'm all for personal compassion and private charity and doing something constructive whether as an individual or in some kind of organized charity group.  But as soon as anybody in government says "compassion," you'd better hang onto your wallets, boys and girls.

And, frankly, I can't be the only person who thinks that all too often government-compassion schemes are basically saying: "See, we care.  So vote for us again.  That other party's full of selfish jerks who don't care about you like we do."
