Keep an eye out for The Most Controversial Decision: Truman, the Atomic Bombs and the Defeat of Japan (Cambridge University Press, 2011), by Fr. Bill Miscamble, C.S.C., Professor of History at Notre Dame University. More from the professor here. I previously talked about Truman's decision here. Note this perspective from a soldier who would have otherwise participated in an invasion of Japan.
UPDATE: There's a lot of interesting debate going on at Ricochet. Check out this one about morality and necessity. The fab James Lileks even comments. If I may add too: Historical hindsight is easy, so very easy. I do not envy Truman as he wrestled with his decision in real time as the Pacific ran red with blood. It was not for nothing that the sign "The Buck Stops Here" rested on his desk.
