History in Photos: the London Blitz

Here is a great collection of photos from the Battle of Britain in 1940.  You will recognize the iconic image of St. Paul's amid the smoke, though it is but one of many memorable images.  Look for 11-year-old then-Princess Elizabeth, close-ups of the Luftwaffe's Messerschmitts, and photos taken from the air.  I give you one image that really struck me.  Remember Napoleon's jibe "England is a nation of shopkeepers"?  Well, they're shopkeepers with nerves of steel.  Click to enlarge if you can't read the sign that the shop owner is chalking up the morning after a German air raid blew away the entire front of his store.

Indomitable.
