The best way to appreciate Ullyses is to simply go to Dublin and take the walking tour with any number of very colorful guides. Some even know what they are talking about which is always a plus. Or be in Dubling for the Blooms Day festivities on June 16th. Which is sort of Ireland's version of Cinco de Mayo where everyone gets so drunk that most people don't even notice two important things. The first in what they are celebrating and second in that those colorful blotches on the sidewalks at closing time are not street art put there for the tourists.
I would have added The Aeneid because it's too long, it's boring, nobody knows who the characters are and the Romans couldn't quite bring themselves to celebrate a non-Roman as one of its founders so Aeneas never makes it to Rome but sort of runs out of steam in Latium.
I'd also add any English novel that was originally serialized and where the author was paid by the word.
