Ah, snarky NBC sports commentator Bob Costas. Sometimes I find him annoying, but his sarcastic take-down of China fanboy Matt Lauer during the opening ceremony make me laugh.
And Costas is at it again. Yesterday I was watching the utterly spectacular men's 400-meter freestyle swimming relay. Amazing stuff as the Americans defeated the heavily favored French team. The sports media is going wild about Michael Phelps, but the real man of the hour is Jason Lezak. He swam the last leg against French swimming powerhouse Alain Bernard and edged him at the very end.
Afterwards, the camera cut to Costas in the studio. He deftly analyzed the relay results, and then he reminded everyone of how, before the race, Alain Bernard had confidently proclaimed, "The Americans? We will smash them."
Costas looked right into the camera as a grin started to spread across his face, and then he said: "Au contraire, mon ami."
Oh, snap!
(And I repeat: I (heart) Bob Costas!)
