Kitchen Notes: Labor Day Grilling -- Five-Spice Short Ribs

This isn't "MM in the Kitchen" because I haven't got the equipment for grilling and I can't set a fire outside my apartment either . . . but, by golly, I would make these gorgeous-looking five-spice grilled short ribs if I could!

Short ribs themselves are a carnivore's joy, grilling is a great American culinary pastime, and the addition of five-spice powder adds a quirky little touch of Chinese cooking. (Digression: I put five-spice powder in my Christmas gingerbread -- my secret ingredient.)

Ah, Labor Day today. Unofficial end of the summer and a great excuse for people all over the country to enjoy a last summer holiday with a good old-fashioned cookout.
